BEST WESTERN PLUS Shelter Cove Lodge is a proud partner with Clean the World, to collect and recycle soap, shampoos, conditioners, lotions and gels that help fight the global spread of preventable disease.  The soaps collected by BEST WESTERN PLUS Shelter Cove Lodge and Martin Resorts properties are shipped to Clean the World for recycling and distribution to communities and countries in greatest need. Clean the World Foundation has a mission to provide soap where needed to help improve hygiene and sanitation conditions, to lessen the impact of disease, and to promote better hygiene and living conditions worldwide.

The Clean the World partnership fits with Martin Resort’s green initiatives and sustainability practices and each Martin Resorts property participates. In 2012, Martin Resorts collected 3,629 pounds of materials, which produced 19,355 new bars of soap to be distributed, while diverting 5,138 pounds of waste from local landfills.

In 2012, BEST WESTERN PLUS Shelter Cove Lodge  collected 520 pounds of soap, which produced 2,773 new bars of soap to be distributed to children and families in need all over the world, while diverting 778 pounds of waste from local landfills.

We are happy with our success in 2012 and can’t wait to see what 2013 has in store!

San Luis Obispo Marathon and Half 2013

The 2nd Annual SLO Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K races will take place on Sunday, April 6 & 7, 2013. The 5K and Kids Fun Run will take place on Saturday, April 6, 2013. The Marathon and Half takes place on Sunday, April 7, 2013. Registration closes March 22, unless the race sells out prior to the registration deadline.

Keeping the same course for 2013, the San Luis Obispo Marathon + Half takes participants through the charming downtown corridor past the old Fremont Theatre, out into the rolling hills of the Edna Valley vineyards and farm land, then back into the city center and onto the Madonna Inn property for the finish. Afterwards participants can experience the SLO Life Expo with live music, locally made microbrews, wine and artisan foods, as well as running gear vendors.

Visit the Monarch Butterfly Grove in Pismo Beach

Each year thousands of vibrant orange and black Monarch Butterflies flock to Pismo Beach, seeking shelter from the freezing northern winters. From late October to February, the butterflies cluster in the limbs of a grove of Eucalyptus trees at Pismo State Beach. This is one of the largest colonies in the nation. Spectators come from throughout the state to view the Monarchs. The Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove is easily accessible. It is located on State Highway 1 at the south boundary of the city limits of Pismo Beach.

Visitors are greeted by knowledgeable and well-informed volunteer docents offering daily talks and information. During the season the Docent Trailer opens at 10am and closes at 4pm daily. Daily talks happen at 11am and 2pm, weather permitting. For more information please call the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce at 800-443-7778.

Visiting in February? Don’t miss the California Western Monarch Day Celebration on February 2nd, 2013. There will be butterfly talks and educational booths for adults as well as art activities for children.
